The female gaze

I’m afraid that it is true. There do seem to be the most enormous differences between the ways in which men and women view the world. This has little to do with equality, but a great deal to do with simple difference.

We were watching the Ladies Singles final from Wimbledon this afternoon, and as usual we found ourselves faced with the need to find a reliable way of differentiating between contestants. Let’s face it: where you have two people rushing around a tennis court, both dressed in generally similar clothing, it isn’t always easy to tell who is who. In the match between Swiatek and Anisimova this afternoon I thought that I had got it sorted. One was wearing a cap, and the other an eye-shade. Got it! End of problem. Regardless of who was serving or whatever contortion the players got into in chasing around the court, their heads were usually visible.

It came as something of a surprise to discover that my wife had devised a completely different metric. One player was wearing white knickers and tried other navy blue. In case of any doubt, one was (shall we say) a “adequately supported”, whereas the other was in need of firmer support.

It makes you think, doesn’t it?
