When we had our New Year party at the Italian language class I go to, one of the members (who I knew to be an academic concerned with music) brought along some instruments with which to entertain us. I had heard about the hurdy-gurdy before, but never seen one. It was also interesting to see a set of Elizabethan recorders, which he could also play. Oh! Yes! and there was the mandolin.
The class reconvened today after the holiday break, and I asked him during the coffee break how many instruments he can actually play. “Well”, he said, “play four different groups of instruments.” We never actually reached the point of exhausting the story before the class was called together again by the teacher.
I have often thought that I am a reasonably versatile painter. It is (I admit) some time since I worked in oils, but a do use regularly pastels (both dry and oil) and acrylic paint. Also I’ve exhibited work in watercolour, pencil and charcoal. Some time ago I had a period of producing 3D items. Also I’ve embellished images done primarily in other media with the addition of gold leaf. So I have held this image of myself as quite adaptable.
But four groups of instruments! Stone the crows!
