When it comes to politics I tend to be an observer rather than a participant. I kicked that habit today. I stumbled across the video of a speech made in Parliament today by a Member named David Lamey. (It was actually sent to me by one of my former students, with whom I’m still in contact.) As an example of passionate eloquence it was absolutely superb, and put to shame the hesitancy and equivocation to which we have been subjected by the leadership of his party over the past couple of years.
Encouraged by his speech, I have just taken the trouble to dig out the email address of my own constituency MP, and I’ve sent her a letter, urging her to do all she can to ensure that this country is not taken out of the European Union. We know that the majority of MPs are actually opposed to leaving, but many of them lack the courage to stand by their beliefs because they are afraid of retribution either by the party apparatchiks, or the disapproval of their constituents.
I guess I might to have become engaged some time ago, and hope it is not too late. It has been good to discover, however, that at least some of our political leaders are on the side of the angels.
