Time and again, listening to the reporting of various social problems, the press appears to be uncritically willing to blame the victims of the situation. Yesterday I picked up a report about the general, nation-wide decrease in the number of Covid-19 cases in this country, appended to which was an observation that in parts of West Yorkshire the rate of infection is still relatively high. Once again the hackneyed explanation was trotted out. This is happening in areas of relatively high density of settlement by people of Asian origin, and they bring it on themselves for two reasons. They are prone to believe disinformation about the vaccine, and they tend to live in large, multi-unit households. Has it never occurred to the reporters that a far more likely explanation is that relatively high rates of infection are associated with poverty?
