I was wondering, as I drove back from the climbing wall in Leeds today, just how long it took David Hockney to get on top of using the iPad as a medium for his creative work. I would be curious to know just how many experiments he junked before permitting any of his work to be seen in public. The same could be asked of any of the now-famous artists who are known to have taken up new media. Did Matisse find himself on the verge of abandoning paper cutouts out of sheer frustration before he finally discovered just how to do it? It is a question I have been pondering during my struggles to get to grips with a new medium.
Engagement with a new medium, in any area of the arts, must surely entail a period of chronic indecision regarding whether this really is the way to go, or a blind alley involving only a waste of time.
