The aesthetic sense is still alive!

I may be swamped by the demands of domestic maintenance at the moment, but there is evidence that my aesthetic sensors are still functioning. In order to make a more convenient provision for our collection of plants in the new conservatory we bought, the other day, a three-tiered arrangement of baskets made of hemp cord. It looked very “folk”, and we thought hat it would make more rational sense of the space. When I finally got around to suspending this contraption in its new location we realised that it was rather badly assembled. None of the three baskets hung in the same horizontal plane as either of the others. It was a cute idea …. but very poorly made.

So, this afternoon I measured it all up, and cut away several of the junctions between the baskets and the hanging cords. I then rejoined the baskets to the cords so that they were horizontal, and parallel to each other. It was a rather satisfying task, actually, and will be very presentable when all the plants are installed in their new homes.

The DIY frenzy is coming to an end, and it will be a great relief to be able to leave it behind. Nevertheless, today has offered me the satisfaction of knowing that I am not only capable of making aesthetic judgements, but also able to put them into action. Isn’t that normally known as “art”? Well, surely it transcends mere “criticism”. “Critics” tell us what they think is wrong with a piece or work, but intakes a proper artist to arrive at the right solution.
