The artist’s burden

Today has been a perfect day. The sun shone all day on a light covering of snow, and there was no wind. The Yorkshire countryside was as picturesque as it ever is. I cannot imagine a better day on which I might have gone for a moorland walk. There was only one problem. I was committed to spending four hours invigilating an exhibition! I suppose that the time was not mis-spent in one respect, in that I was able to write our Christmas cards. I have to admit, however, that here were moments when I asked why it was that God had made me an artist? Ah, well!

The day was not without it’s moments of interest. Two teenagers walked into the gallery and asked, “Are we allowed in here?” Evidently we really need to do some work on that one. What is it about art galleries that might make anybody ask that question?
