What makes for a sense of progress?

Among other things, getting my work photographed. I’m working yup to a set of applications for entry into several competitive exhibitions, and I can never manage to produce my own photographs to an acceptable standard. I am very lucky indeed to have my friend Steve, who is a professional photographer, who is happy to do this service for me at “mates’ rates”. These sessions are always reenforcing in other respects too, such as his incidental comment about framing. Apart from anything else, it is good to spend the afternoon in congenial company.

Speaking of “congenial”, tonight is Burns Night, when the poetry of Robert Burns is celebrated. We managed a fairly traditional festivity, with haggis and “bashed neeps” accompanied by a good Jura whisky, with music by the band Fiddler’s Bid on tape.* I don’t suppose it matters, celebrating a lowland poet, that the music was from Shetland, the whisky from the western isles and neither my wife nor myself have any claim to Scottish ancestry. On the whole it’s been a good day.

*Yes. Tape!
