It is often said of one type of actors that they are people who have difficulty in permitting their inner selves to enter into public communication. They get by through the device of adopting a succession of personae, the purpose of which is to conceal their inner selves behind masks. (I suppose that Peter Sellers might be taken as the type-case of this kind of actor, but there are many others.) It has also been said of painting that it is a means of “self-expression” and of externalising something of the inner self of the artist. That may well be true of some painters, but not of all of us. There is that other kind of painter, whose art is a form of masking of the deeper self, rendering it safe to go out into the world without being recognised.
