Recently I broached the subject (yet again) of the pricing of art work. Today I am in the final stages of preparation for my exhibition at the Apothecary Gallery, in Thornton, and all that remains to be done is to agree on the prices I will ask, before hanging the show on Wednesday. Today I had a bright idea, which I think might offer some help.
Tomorrow I will go and visit several commercial galleries in the area, and try to form some idea of the kinds of prices they are asking for work which appears to be more or less comparable with my own. These places are not strictly equivalent in terms of the kinds of work they offer, and the comparative wealth of the places in which they are located. Nevertheless, I expect that I will end up with a better idea than I have at the moment, which sees me oscillating wildly between the belief that I am giving my stuff away, and the conviction that if I were less ambitious I would be able to sell far more of my work.
We shall see!
Sounds like a good plan. The prices I saw in St Ives a couple of years ago were eye-wateringly high for art of no better quality than that which I see for sale in Yorkshire for priced much more reasonably.
