I had an interesting experience today, after my weekly climbing session. From the climbing wall in Harrogate it was possible to devise a route home which took me past four galleries of one kind or another (one in Otley, two in Ilkley and one in Bingley.) I was able to stop off and take a crafty look to see what kind of prices they were asking for work in different media and of different sizes. I reached two conclusions very quickly.
The metric I had devised for calculating the price of my pictures appears to be broadly in line with the market (leaving aside one well-known artist with an established following). Artists are expected to work for peanuts, and the prices we can commend for our work would be scandalous if costed as an hourly rate for our labour.
