Getting back on track

I am amazed to discover that a week has passed since I last posted. There is a reason for this. Life over the past year has been full of pressure, and this has accumulated as the year has passed. A couple of days ago I was brought face to face quite suddenly with the realisation that I really needed to assess my priorities again. It has not been easy for me to accept, simply, that at my age it isn’t possible to go on working at the level of intensity I could manage forty (or even twenty) years ago. Wheels were coming off the wagon in a rather disturbing way.

So for a couple of days now I have been doing as little as possible, and attempting to assess both my priorities and the intensity with which I am going to be able to work. As the man in the song put it, “I’m reviewing the situation.” To my surprise the change in the way life feels has been pretty well instant. The questions remain, but I have a feeling now that things are manageable, and that I am going to be able to devise a programme which balances ambition and capability.
