The absurdity of memory

I’m constantly puzzled by the ways in which memory works (or not, as the case may be.) My wife and I were attempting a crossword puzzle during a tea-break from gardening this afternoon. She asked me what is the Latin word for “but” …. which I was able to supply immediately. I haven’t studied any Latin since I was perhaps fifteen years old. It is frequently the case, however, that when I’m looking for a comparably common Italian word, although I’m currently studying the language and have been doing so for perhaps ten years, I find myself rooting about in the recesses of my memory, and perhaps have to resort to the dictionary. It’s crazy!
