No, I’m not referring to today’s announcement by the Prime Minister of the date of a general election. What I have in mind is my decision today to commit myself to the wholesale revision of my web-site. I had a very useful meeting with a young woman who has been able to show me work she has done designing a site for another artist. Clearly she understands the issues in this type of work. Let’s go!
I’m not exactly sure when the site was created, but I have in my file a letter from its designer from 2010, talking about “revision”. So clearly it is time it was given a pretty thorough shake-up. The world of communication has changed, and I need to take into consideration the fact that the majority of visitors now probably consult it via a mobile ‘phone and not a computer on a desk. It’s all very exciting!
My ideas about a new site are by no means fixed and clear at this stage, but if readers have comments to make I would be very happy to receive them. My thanks in anticipation.
Mobile phones, tablets, RSS readers, (I use one to see new publications/posts, like yours here), desktop computers – there’s a lot out there!
When designing/redesigning a website, there is a lot of things to consider, i.e., how flexible is the hosting provider, how reliable/secure it is, who fixes stuff when it gets broken, how dynamic the content should be (as simple as a blog to as complicated as applications, shopping carts, etc.).
Over the years, things have become easier and simpler, there are plenty of options out there, of course. I’d argue that this sometimes poses issues as well.
Modern websites use various templates (and often these are out-of-the-box) to deliver the content depending where it’s viewed. Various systems exists to make the experience smooth for content consumers, but what matters is also how easy it is to keep the content updated (or transplanted somewhere else, if necessary) by the publisher (as in content producers, like artists).
When building a website it is always good to think about the ease of maintenance, being able to move your data out, and how comfortable the admins are creating their own content. There’s a balance here: some technical knowledge might be necessary, but these days I’d go for solutions that are user friendly and less esoteric.
