A moving story

There is a very good reason why my posts have been less frequent of late. We are preparing to move house. Sadly, this has become an all-consuming occupation which has diverted my attention almost entirely from art. It doesn’t look as if I am going to be able to do much productive work in the near future either. Having lived in our present house for twenty-seven years we have accumulated a pretty substantial collection of “stuff”, which really has to be evaluated and sorted …. and to a large extent disposed of …. before we move.

My artistic activity has not escaped this scrutiny. I have been determined to make an evaluation of the pile of work I have accumulated rather uncritically, which has resulted in my getting rid of somewhere between a quarter and a third of my stock. I am planning to hold a sale of the recovered frames in a couple of weeks, hoping to recoup a little of the rather reckless expense I incurred. If the truth were to be acknowledged, I could probably repeat the exercise to good effect.

At times the experience has been disturbing. Yesterday I sorted through there filing drawers containing the correspondence relating to my art activities. The result has not only been a dramatic reduction in the amount of paper remaining, but a rather unsettling realisation that is frequent years I have been far less conscientious than I once was in promoting my work through exhibitions. I really must pull my socks up! Has the cause been idleness, or a lack of confidence in the value of what I have been doing? I’m not sure.

As the song says: “There’ll be some changes made”!
