A member of the family has just sent me an email I can scarcely believe. The library of a minor higher education institution in the UK has just issued a warning on the loan of George Orwell’s 1984 on the ground that it might contain material that is offensive. I can only assume that it will not be long before The Bible also carries a “woke” warning. My mind turns to my last post, in which I talked about the art of Artemesia Gentilleschi. God only knows what such sensitive souls might make of her Susannah and the Elders, or even more, Judith and Holophernes. Come to think of it, there is probably no decent art gallery in the world that wouldn’t be under a ban if this principle is extended consistently. Heaven help us!
