A couple of days ago I mentioned my curiosity as to the reason why the history of Wales I am reading gave such a little space to the arts.* Reflecting on this matter since then I remembered a very good TV series on this subject, presented by Huw Stephens. I believe that this is still available on the BBC iPlayer.
We have been regular attenders at the “Cardiff Singer of the World” competitions, held every two years. One of the high-points for me on each of these occasions has been to visit galleries in the city. In addition to the National Gallery of Wales there is a very good private gallery, the name of which escapes me at the moment. The last time we were there we visited an excellent retrospective exhibition by David Nash, who is a sculptor working mainly in wood.** Although he is of English origin he has been settled in Wales for many years now, so that even if he doesn’t qualify as a “Welsh artist” he would certainly merit consideration in any survey of “art in Wales.”
Our small artistic collective “Unit 9” will be able to meet for the first time this evening, after a long break. I’m really looking forward to regaining contact with my colleagues after what seems to be an age. I know with these occasions that the food will be good regardless of any benefit to my art!
