Busy doing nothing?

I don’t know whether you are old enough to remember the old music hall song of this title. (I don’t remember the music halls, of course, but the song remained a popular item with concert parties during my childhood.)

“Busy doing nothing, Working the whole day through. Trying to find lots of work not to do. Busy getting nowhere, isn’t it just a crime? We’d like to be unhappy but we never do have the time”

My word! It takes me back! It came into my head this morning, ironically, as I wrestled with the task of getting off an application for an exhibition. Suddenly I find myself pursuing several positive opportunities. The trouble I encountered, however, is that each application needs to be accompanied by a couple of illustrations of what I am proposing. I have made the disturbing discovery that, although I have put my files in order the box of CDs in which the good quality photographs of my work are stored is anything but orderly. A casual estimate puts their number at around forty! In no case do I have a detailed record of what any of them contains, and (to my shame) some of them are labelled very casually indeed.

Having spent a good part of the morning threshing around looking for a specific illustration (successfully, as it turns out) I reached lunch-time in a state of frustration and exhaustion. I really must, as a matter of urgency, create an index of my illustrations, and label the discs clearly, even ‘though I recognise that this will be a tedious and time-consuming job.

Do you remember a couple of posts ago that I wrote about my sudden fear of having nothing to do? Chance would be a fine thing! It looks on present showing as if I will have my nose to the grindstone until at least February!
