This is the title of an old music hall song, and it came into my head today after dinner. We went out for the day, to Saltaire and Keighley, and at first I was feeling a little resentful at having to set aside my painting. I’ve been feeling that there has been oaf progress recently, and I was a little resentful about having to leave it aside for the day. As I was preparing dinner this evening, however, I realised that the day had been far from wasted. I had had the opportunity, in occasional brief periods of encounter with my work, to reflect on what is going well and what is not going so well, without the incentive to pick up a brush and rush into poking about. These interruptions can actually be positively useful, as occasions when, artistically speaking, you catch your breath.
We watched Strictly Come Dancing after dinner. I am always willing to watch dance in almost any form. My wife was a little startled when I described the performance for which I voted as a gesamtkunstwerk.
