I’m fond of the story of the famous composer who played one of his pieces to a friend. “It’s wonderful,” said the friend, “but what does it mean?” So the composer played it again. Our understanding of any work of art needs to take it on its own terms, and it is not necessary to attempt to translate it into words. I am a painter, so it is appropriate to look at one of my paintings in order to form some idea of what I mean.
The picture I have chosen is entitled Resurrection. You could say that it is a “religious” picture, if you like. It could be said to be a “Christian” picture. I certainly did not have any didactic intention in painting it, however, and it is not offered as a statement of a doctrine of resurrection. It is a visual representation of an experience of resurrection. There is a big difference.
