Both the magnitude and the artistic purposes of my window designing task are starting to register.
I’ve already had to email a list of four questions to Bob the glass man, and no doubt there will be a similar list before the week-end is out.
One of the central aims I want to set myself is becoming clearer as I prepare preliminary sketches. I want the windows to compel the engagement of the viewer, and not simply to be objects of regard. For this reason I have chosen the words for the first window: At the going-down of the sun, and in the morning. I hope that this will stimulate the viewers to supply for themselves the completion: We will remember them. There will be elements also of initial puzzlement, where viewers will have to do some work in order to decode the symbolism.
