…. but for some reason I don’t. The experience of travel yesterday had so many encouraging things about it; particularly I was aware of the number of occasions on which I encountered people who were cheerful, helpful and obviously doing well the things I would hope they would do. I was impressed especially by the woman and her daughter who sat opposite me on the train, who were clearly engaged (from the scraps I overheard) in exactly the kind of supportive exchange one might have hoped for in that relationship. Today I am very aware of the lovely relationship I have with my wife. This afternoon has been spent with a group from the church who went bowling together …. not the American version with ten pins in a bowling alley, but the genuine English version, done on a subtly domed and closely-cropped area of natural grass. The company was very diverse, with adults and children, married and single, experienced at the game and total novices, and quite a selection of ethnic backgrounds. The age-range extended, at a guess, for eight to nearly eighty. It was a super occasion. I ought, by any objective measure, be feeling cheerful and relaxed and very thankful for for my lot in life. Nevertheless, something is wrong, and I don’t know what it is. How strange! I am distracted and troubled, but without being able to identify and specific cause for me state of mind. Time will tell.
