I’m biding my time

I wonder if you are familiar with the song of that title, by Cleo Laine. I love her voice, because she has such a capacity to communicate subtle emotional differences. In this case what could be a submission to strategic patience is lifted by the suggestion that a game is being played. Ambiguity has great artistic potential.

At the moment I’m trying to achieve something similar in relation to art. A good part of the day has been spent in ordering rituals, cleaning and tidying the studio. (I had no idea it had become so filthy until I started!) The day could have been passed in dour submission to the demands of necessity, or the frustration of simply not being able to find anything any more interesting to do. I have found, however, that it has been possible to lift the spirit of the day by a little creative ambiguity. I am indeed biding my time. There is something artistic developing back there in the shadows. I’m pretending that I have no real intention of doing anything about that. More pressing tasks demand my attention. Every now and then I take a peep, just to make sure that it is still there, but for the time being let’s pretend that it’s not. I’ll pounce when I’m good and ready.

Meanwhile, I’m biding my time.
