Is anything more important than art?

Well….yes and no, actually. I was amazed to discover this evening that I haven’t posted on this blog for three days. I am aware that I don’t write every day, but three days is probably exceptional. Has something more important intervened that is more important?

There is the fact that the house is falling down! That’s an exaggeration, actually. The conservatory, we discovered, is beyond repair, so I have been passing the time fruitlessly patching it up with filler so that at least it will look respectable until we can get round to replacing it. I have to confess that I have been feeling somewhat resentful of the time I’ve had to spend on this when I could be painting.

The reason for my resentfulness is the fact that when not bodging I been immersed in a picture. (This is the one that has resulted from my walk the other day.) It has all come together remarkably easily, and already I am at that stage of staring at it for ages, wondering if it is really finished. The feeling of relief I have had when it has been possible to lay aside my building bodging and pick up the pastels again has been immense. Surely nothing is more important than art?

Well….perhaps. Finished or not, I will be climbing tomorrow! I tell myself that at this stage in the project I really need to spend a little time away from the picture in order to see it with a certain freshness when I get back to it on Wednesday. It is a tossup, I have to confess, as to whether I say that entirely in good faith.
