“”For all the talk one hears these days about the marvels of contemporary communication, I am beginning to feel that perhaps the old pigeon post might have its advantages. I have had great difficulty on this journey logging in to my own website. Sometimes the problems have been obscurely technical, and sometimes down to my unwillingness to pay €45 just to get online. Anyway, here I am, in bed, in my hotel in Seville, after a very good meal, and everything seems to be in order.
“Seville?” I hear you say. “I thought you were in Italy”. Well I was, but we are now on the way home, via Spain. Don’t ask why. That’s just the way the tour company does it.
As a holiday it has been a very weird experience. As it happens, my Ph.D. thesis was written on the sociology of tourism, and sadly I have spent a good bit of the time in academic mode, analysing the process instead of just enjoying myself. It has been possible to escape from the academic prison every now and then, however, and I’m glad to say that the means of escape have been provided by art, in various ways. There is quite a bit to be said in that regard, but I guess I’ll leave all that until tomorrow. Anyway: it’s good to be back in touch. Watch this space from now on.
