…. you can’t find everything you want on the internet! I spent ages looking on the internet for photographs of British troops equipped for bomb disposal–in connection with my design for stained glass windows for the Defence Academy chapel in Shrivenham. I turned up hundreds of photographs, but none of them were what I wanted. I could even get pictures of Chinese equipment. In the end my preliminary designs made do with what I think are probably pictures of an American soldier.
Not surprisingly, I have to get it right in the final version, and the Academy have kindly offered to mail me a selection of pictures taken specially for the occasion.
I wonder if the tide has turned now, and people (as they use the net more often) come to realise its limitations as well as its strengths. When it comes to art, of course, there is no substitute for direct experience.
