Recently I have felt that I am attempting to reconcile two contradictory aims. For some time I have been promising myself that sketching will be a more regular part of my regime. Meanwhile, of course, as we approach the time when we will be moving house, I become more keenly aware of all the tasks which need to be done in order to be ready for that. Today I hit upon what I hope might be a way of serving both of these aspirations.
My hope is to record the process of getting ready to move in a series of sketches, so that I have a visual record of the process. Tonight I have decided on the first of these. I have an old sleeping bag which must have been with me for at least forty years. This object was in use when we went on family coming holidays, and my kids are now in their fifties!
I have been using it very occasionally since then, because I assist every year with a charity for the homeless, which provides winter accommodation for them in local churches. Because beds are only available on these occasions for the people we are accommodating, the volunteer staff have been expected to provide their own. So for one week each year I have hauled out my old sleeping bag. This year I decided that at my age I can be excused this kind of duty, and the sleeping bag is finally going to be discarded. So: tonight I intend to begin the first of my entries in the record of our preparations to move, by doing a “portrait” of my old Blacks of Greenock “Pal-o-mine”.
It remains to be seen, of course, how long I can sustain this very worthy enterprise.
