Even after twenty-five years at this game I find that I am still learning new things. I mentioned in a recent post that I have been asked to undertake a commission, for the first time ever. Naturally I was keen, and threw myself into the task, which is now finished, to the satisfaction of the commissioner. I then faced the question of framing, and did ask him whether he would prefer to do it on the cheap, with me offering my best efforts, or whether he would prefer to get the job done properly through a professional framer. Not at all to my surprise he opted for the latter!
So: today I drove over to Mytholmroyd to a framer whose services have impressed me on previous occasions. It was only as I opted for a very pleasing solution that it struck me that I had not, in fact, asked my client how much he wanted to spend on framing. Has he any idea at all of what constitutes a reasonable price for a job of this kind? Faced with the possibility of deferring the commission until I had the chance to talk with him again tomorrow, and then perhaps having to drive over to Mytholroyd again if he decided that he wanted a much cheaper option, I decided that I would accept the framer’s proposal and, if it came to the crunch, passing it on to my client at less than cost, taking a hit myself.
I won’t do that again!
