A few days ago I mentioned the difficulty I have often in landing on titles for my work. In connection with the set of pictures on which I’m working at the moment it does look as if I might have solved my problem.
It is interesting, the way in which ideas float into one’s head, and puzzling as to where they come from. Out of the blue, however, it suddenly came to me that it might be good to use musical terms. These would enable me to give viewers a hint about where to look in searching for a clue regarding my intentions, while avoiding banal descriptions of each subject. This is specially important because they are all pictures of large trees, although very different from each other in feeling and aspect. Obviously there are some terms to avoid. Let’s face it, to refer to a tree as Andante would be plain absurd. Nevertheless, I believe that I might be onto something here.
A couple of friends will be calling round tomorrow, for lunch, and it will be interesting to register some responses to this group of pictures, none of which has been seen by anyone else but my wife, as yet.
