Nothing but the best

Yes: but which is the “best”? It’s a problematic choice I face on a regular basis. Every time I put forward an entry to be included in a competitive exhibition I face the same question. Just what is my “best work?” Of course, in some cases the fact that an exhibition is devoted to one specific medium narrows the choice seriously. Not surprisingly, the Pastel Society only wants to see my pastels. In the case of the Derbyshire Open, to which I hope to apply next week, they are very insistent that they only want to see work that is (at most) three years old. In some other cases, however, the choice is rather more agoraphobic.

On this occasion I might well simplify the choice for myself by putting forward only my work in egg tempera, on the basis that the unusual nature of the medium might tickle somebody’s fancy. I have a few days yet in which to make up my mind.
