Now that’s what I call professional!

This afternoon I visited the framer who does most of my pictures. We’ve worked together for many years now, and although he is expensive I have come to recognise the quality of what he does. Actually, I consider it a privilege to be able to use his services because I know that he not only works with some quite well-known artists but also for the city gallery. I went to collect a piece has been framing for me for a local show, but also to take the series of images based on the “Green Man” that I have ready in preparation for my exhibition in Lincoln Cathedral in the summer.

I really found the conversation with Andy to be very instructive, as he explained to me the subtle difficulties which my images presented to him. Particularly, of course, there was the problem that is posed by the fact that I had drawn a black line around each of them. Very nicely (of course) he explained to me that however careful I might be in drawing these it is likely that I will not have been as precise as his cutting equipment. If the mount is too close to my drawn lines the discrepancy would be jarringly obvious, so that he needs to position the mount sufficiently far back from my line that any discrepancy would not be apparent.

In the past I have come to be aware of the exactness of his choice in relation to the colour of a mount, or the material used in a frame. It is really good to be able to rely on the judgement of a craftsman like him. His work certainly enhances anything I might do.
