Perhaps it is important to stand still

My normal Sunday morning routine includes watering the house plants. At this time of the year also I take a look at the trays of seeds we have planted in the conservatory …. salad, beetroot and onions for me, and several kinds of flowers under my wife’s care. It has amused me quite often when I have observed her impatience, looking anxiously for signs of germination and growth. “Patience!” I tell her. “That’s very important in gardening.”

Of course, it might be equally important in art. I ask myself whether my current period of inactivity is really only wasted time, or am I waiting for something to grow?

The state of my back at the moment, having spent an unwise amount of time stripping unwanted ivy, tells me also that it is possible to try too hard in the garden. I wonder if that is possible in art also.
