I have been off line recently for several reasons. For some of the time I was visiting family in Oxford, and was kept pretty busy. I also had some (unexplained) technical reasons that stopped me getting on line. Several days, however, were spent in London, and some of that time working in the library of the Estorick Collection, on a talk on Italian art during the Fascist period, intended for the New Year. Now I’m back on Earth, and I hope to be able to resume my blog from now on.
You probably don’t know about the Estorick Collection. It is a private institution set up in London by the family of an American collector, called Eric Estorick. He and his wife Salome had a passion for Italian modernism, and after their death the house and its collection were turned into a permanent gallery and study centre specialising in the interests of the Estoricks. They have a rotating series of really interesting exhibitions borrowed from major Italian collections, as well as their own material. It is a tremendous resource, and I go there regularly. The staff are great …. and they have an excellent restaurant/cafe.
I’m amused by the fact that I used my Italian language there in two days to a greater extent than I did during my holiday in Italy.
