After the excitement of the last week or so, generated by both my momentous birthday and the climbing trip, I’m now emerging into something like normality. The physical stiffness I ought to have expected from my day in Derbyshire, is wearing off and I’m trying to take stock of what needs to be done. Not surprisingly, it hasn’t taken long for it to sink in that I really do need to get to grips with preparation for my exhibition in Lincoln Cathedral, in July.
OK: so July seems like a long way into the future, but there are two really important tasks to be done well in advance. I have been planning to produce an illustrated brochure to accompany the exhibition, and I am convinced that (as I mentioned in a previous post) it would be a very good idea if I could produce some larger pieces for that huge venue. To my great relief I managed to finish one today, but I would like to manage another. The first one came together really quite quickly, but I have to confess that at the moment I have only the vaguest idea what the second one might consist of.
Popular wisdom sees artists as driven by “inspiration”, whereas I am learning rapidly that at least as important is sheer necessity! Still: my wife has gone to the theatre with a friend tonight, and I have the place to myself with no distractions. A quiet couple of hours of free association with a pencil and sketch-pad would seem to be what is required. Wish me luck!
