I have never before thought of myself as having much to say in favour of the work of Kasimir Malevich. Perhaps today, however, I have come to regard him rather more favourably. I got back home after my weekly climbing expedition to find a ‘phone call from one of the people who frame m y pictures. When I called him back he told me that he had experienced some difficulty in getting the task done properly because the image was not, in fact, perfectly square at the corners. I have to collect the piece tomorrow, and I am not quite sure what he has done to overcome this problem, but he tells me it is OK now. Perhaps now I have to acknowledge a least that Malevich’s Black Square was actually square! It is a bit of an embarrassment, isn’t it, to have to admit that as an artist I can’e even draw a right angle!
