Do you know that Leonard Cohen song? One of my sons thinks that Cohen lacks a sense of humour, and this is one of the things I fling at his head in riposte. Check it out.
It came into my head today when I was sorting some pictures. Because of the amount of space I am allowed in my forthcoming show I find myself engaged in quite an extensive sort-out of my material. In particular, the ones that have been on the walls in the house for some time, now defined for the gallery, need to be replaced, and that has resulted in my uncovering pieces I have not looked at for years.
Not altogether to my surprise I have come across some pictures that I now think were not up to much, and the best thing about them is that their frames now become available for recycling. On the other hand, there have been several occasions when my response has been, “Gosh! Did I do that?” Two items in particular have been pulled out of the racks and promoted to more prominent positions in the house. (I think that they are both available in my “galleries” elsewhere in this website.)
The first is a watercolour entitled Post Impressionism, which is a little study of a section of old sea defences on the Norfolk coast. Not only am I proud of the title, but I actually think that it isn’t a bad little watercolour. The second is my Ancient Olives at the Pont du Gard. It is many years old, but the combination of its ability to capture the character of the trees, together with the subtle sense of reflected light, are definitely something to be proud of.
This discussion reminds me of the fact that I have been rather remiss recently in posting a “picture of the month.” Not only have I been on holiday but I have been suffering from tunnel vision in relation to the forthcoming exhibition. Over the next couple of days I’ll try to make time to rectify that. I hope you will take a look. Maybe I’ll make a point of finding something else in the “back catalogue” with which I am pleased on renewed acquaintance.
