Starting a picture is like swatting a fly.

Two things are vital to the successful swatting of a fly. First of all, there can be no half-measures or hesitation. The gesture must be made with absolute commitment and without holding back. Then the fly must be at rest and clearly visible. Trying to swat a fly one the wing is a complete waste of time.

Painting is very much like that. Right now the first of these conditions is fulfilled in relation to an idea I have in mind for a picture. I’m ready to throw myself into it. The idea is not, as yet, completely in focus, and (metaphorically speaking) not yet at rest. Tomorrow’s task is simply to wait and observe until I know that it is exactly the right moment to strike.

This immobility and lack of distraction is a fortunate side-effect of the fact that I am incapacitated at the moment by plantar fasciitis (a sore heel to you and me) which as far as I can tell is best treated by immobility. Luckily painting involves (at least for me) the hands and not the feet.
