A couple of days ago I suggested that a good way of passing the time during lockdown might be to tackle a puzzle I set relating to the game of Scrabble.* I had a great time wrestling with this one last night, and at least I have reached an answer. By making the word “conventionality” along the edge of the board, and presupposing that earlier in the game some of the squares had already been occupied, I was able to use all seven of my hypothetical tiles, and at the same time win all three of the triple word bonuses.
The result of this was the impressive score of 243, to which (of course) had to be added the additional bonus of 50 for using all my seven tiles in one go. This gave me a score for a single turn of 293! Amazing! Lots of players would be proud to have that for their overall score at the end of a game.
I would be very interested indeed to receive news of anybody who can beat that. It should be possible because the face value of the tiles in my hand was quite low.
Don’t worry. I have not abandoned art altogether, and I will probably have more to say about that in my next post. Even artists need a holiday every now and then.
