The sound of wheels falling off wagons

Wheels are falling off the wagon all over the place today (and I don’t just have in mind the disasters of our current political situation.)

Today being Tuesday I went off to the Leeds climbing wall for my weekly session. We started well, but then my climbing partner had a panic call from his business saying that one of his staff couldn’t make the PayPal system work, and so he had to leave early to sort out the problem.

His call came during the lunch break, and we were rather preoccupied with the problems of a friend who also climbs on Tuesdays. It seems to be the case that she has quite a serious medical problem and we were all concerned as to whether she was about to have a heart attack. After resting she seemed to be on the mend, but there is clearly something to be very concerned about there, and it cast a shadow over the day.

When I got back from Leeds the joiner was well-embarked on the repair job he was doing on our conservatory. The problem has turned out to be rather more serious than we expected, as there has been an unsuspected leak from the gutter that has been causing rot where we hadn’t expected to find it. The whole thing should probably be demolished and a new one put in its place, but we will have it patched up for the time being and think again.

I’m due to give a short talk to a church group tonight, and believed that I had it all sorted out in readiness. All of a sudden it seems that perhaps I might have judged the audience quite wrongly. I was intending to take as a starting point poem by W.H. Auden, but now ….. maybe that is not quite right, and a rapid rethink is needed.

Finally (I hope) I have got as far as planning a new picture after a long period in which I have not been able to work. Thinking about the development of the idea this a afternoon I am afraid that the board I prepared for the project might well be in the wrong proportions, so I will need to start all over again.

I think I’m running out of wheels!
