At a visit to the optician a week ago it was spotted that I am developing cataracts. The ophthalmologist suggested that I ought to do something fairly soon, and made an appointment for me at a specialist eye-clinic, which I attended yesterday in order to assess the extent of my need and whether or not there might be any problem in my having the operation. It was spotted that my heart-rate is fairly low, and just to be on the safe side it was recommended that I have a more thorough check in this area, by my regular medical practitioner. I ‘phoned the surgery this morning, and made an appointment to see the doctor later this afternoon. She decided that it would be a good idea to take an ECG, just to be on the safe side. This will take place next week. The result of this test will be sent to the eye-clinic, and it is expected that they will make an appointment to have the first cataract operation within a couple of weeks.
The press is full of discussion about the problems of the NHS at the moment, because of the dispute over the pay of medical personnel. We don’t give enough attention to just how well-served we are by this service, and how very well-served we are in this country. Oh, yes! I ought to mention that this is all free at the point of delivery, and covered by general taxation.
