We are all familiar with the old metaphor about the time and distance it takes in order to alter the course of an oil tanker. It had never occurred to me that it might one day be applied to me! Right now, however, I’m becoming aware of its aptness to my situation. Having revved up to full speed in a very particular direction, in order to make sure that my two exhibitions took place successfully, I find that I am now having to rethink pretty well all of my priorities. I’m reminded of the old Spike Milligan sketch in which the characters wander about aimlessly moaning, “What do we do now?”
I have an awareness on the fringe of my consciousness that I am supposed to be getting ready for another exhibition at Lincoln Cathedral in July. Under normal circumstances this would be quite an exciting prospect, motivating me to do all kinds of things. To my own puzzlement, however, I don’t seem to be able to make the change of mental direction required to do anything about that. I am vaguely aware that I had it in mind to do one additional new piece for there occasion, but I’m facing in quite the wrong direction.
I suspect that what is required is a spell of what the French philosopher and sociologist Auguste Comte called “mental hygiene”, in which extraneous and distracting thought will be expunged from my head, probably by the means of a short but intensive spell in the garden.
