I was interested today, taking a short cut through the church yard, to see that a tree had been blown over. As we have not had very high winds of late I was curious about what might have caused this. On closer inspection I believe that I have the explanation. The tree in question had actually grown up in the rotting stump of an older one. Over time the stump had been colonised by at least two species of fungus, which had been steadily decomposing it, to the point that a relatively light wind had been able to push over the new tree.
Many years ago I took a consistent interest in mycology, and only abandoned this when my older son took his microscope with him to university. I could have bought one for myself, but never did. Every now and then, however, the interest does flare up, and I realise again what an interesting area it is.
Now, there’s a thought! perhaps there is a picture in this! I wonder if I will be able to use the experience to kick-start a revival of active engagement with painting.
