Well, I’ve finished (I hope) my new study in acrylic paint, but what an adventure it’s been! I would not have thought that not is possible to forget so much so quickly. The real horror is the fact that in the past I always used a sheet of thick glass a a palette, because this is the easiest thing to clean afterwards. It was only as I was clearing up that I remembered this trick …. too late! I was half-way through the project when I discovered a jar of matt medium, and even by the end of the task I was still debating with myself as to whether I had selected the right brushes.
I believe that this one is going to need to sit on the easel for at least a week until I decide whether or not it has been worth the effort. There is no hurry here, however, because once again I am out of ideas as to what I might do next. Compared to the previous piece I finished, in oil pastels, on a very similar subject, I am not immediately convinced that I want to go back to acrylic. The exercise has certainly not been wasted, however, because even if I return to working with pastels this experience will enable me to appreciate better the specific characteristics of that medium.
