To see ourselves as others see us

A famous poem by Robert Burns prays that we might see ourselves others see us. I’m sure that this can be an uncomfortable experience under somer circumstances, and convinced that Burns is right in seeing it as a valuable one. Every now and then it turns out to be rather gratifying.

Last night I went to the opening reception for my exhibition entitled Observations, at the Apothecary Gallery in Thornton. It was a positive experience, even ‘though the turnout was fairly small. (It was, let’s face it, barbecue weather!) The good thing about it was the positive response I had from other artists. I don’t think that they were just being polite or kind. It really did seem that the quality of my work is genuinely appreciated by colleagues. That was very encouraging.

One thing I will need to try and change. A group of three small pictures which I intended to be seen as a triptych have been separated in the hanging process, diminishing their collective and individual impact. I will be going up to the gallery again tomorrow, so I’ll see if I can rectify that.
