This afternoon I called into the Apothecary Gallery in order to show my face at an event there. I found myself in conversation with a woman who had run a gallery in London in the past, and I was flattered by her appreciation of my work. She asked what arrangements I had made to publicise the event, and it became evident rapidly that although I thought I had put in a reasonable effort I am seriously out of touch with contemporary communications technology.
On the spot, she got out her mobile ‘phone and made a brief film of the show. This was then packaged with a title, background music and a few comments by me on the approach I had taken in putting together the event. This became what she termed a “reel” (which was news to me) and within minutes was uploaded to the internet. Before checking into this blog I was amazed to discover that it is now out there on Youtube!
Many years ago, when I first commissioned this website, I really thought I was up there at the cutting edge of communication. This afternoon’s experience has drawn my attention in no uncertain terms to the fact that I really do need to get a grip. The conversation I am planning with somebody whom I hope will redesign this site, next week, I expect will need to have a somewhat broader remit!*
