You have probably seen the famous Monty Python sketch about the arrival of the Spanish Inquisition …. which, of course, nobody expects. Starting with the mention of their “two weapons”, the list rapidly expands to at least four in a series that is potentially indefinitely open-ended. I’ve had a moment like that today.
In previous postings I’ve mentioned my series of images based upon the idea of the “Green Man”. This was originally indeed to consist of seven items, but then as I approached the end of the project two more came to mind. When these were completed I arranged for my friend Steve Rayner to photograph them for me, so that I could try to find some openings for exhibition. Then today …. you guessed it!
This afternoon it came into my head absolutely out of the blue that the series is radically incomplete. It consists of seven “roof bosses” and two “capitals”. How could I have been so negligent? There is something seriously missing if I don’t include a third “capital”. I have to admit that, on the lines of the Monty Python sketch, I fear that it might not stop there!
Oddly, it has been quite refreshing to have a day away from art. Much of it has been spent, seizing a brief pause in the rain, in the garden cutting back the laurels. They need to be made to know their place!
