It is possible that I have remarked upon this previously, but I was very interested this morning to see the level of communal participation at our local Remembrance service, in Clayton. Every year the turnout at the war memorial appears to be larger. I counted twenty-five wreaths laid there, which must be some indication of the numbers and variety of local organisations which are involved.

There are different, and not incompatible, explanations for this. My wife has remarked that people appreciate occasions on which they can feel something in an otherwise bland existence. Putting on my sociological hat, I am interested in this as an indication of a felt need to belong and participate. It is, either way, a good event which certainly is not confined to the generation which might remember the Second World War.

On a different front, but equally encouraging, I have begun preparations for another picture, after a break of several months. I do hope that it comes to something.
