Today the Unit 9 gallery at there South Square Centre changes its name. From now on we will be known as The Gallery Upstairs. When the Centre first began to operate, the various elements in it continued to be known by the numbers of the retail units in the building. The area which became the gallery occupied the former “Unit 9”, and continued to be known under that name in its new role as a gallery. Things have changed. The old Unit numbers no longer bear any relationship to what goes on in the place, and for some time now the Unit 9 gallery has operated in a different space …. in fact, it moved from a ground floor location to space on the first floor.
An added problem has been the fact that many visitors to the Centre have been unaware that there is a gallery upstairs. In an effort both to catch up with the facts on the ground, and to make it simpler for visitors to the Centre to find us, see have decided to adopt the straightforwardly descriptive title of The Gallery Upstairs.
