For the first time in ages I have managed to spend almost all of the day in front of the easel, working on a new picture. I would have been so disappointed had my resolution to do this been thwarted by some trivial intrusion. I had selected the support and the medium (oil pastels) in advance, so I didn’t have to spend time threshing about trying to make up my mind on either score. I had even collected the resource material I needed, and had a pretty good idea of where it was going.
Sadly, for some reason or another, the result is pretty dreadful. The paper doesn’t appear to take the oil pastels well. The colours all seem to be muddy, and at the end of the day I am pretty sure that the composition needs to be adjusted …. actually, that’s a euphemism for “started all over again.” Probably a major cause of this situation is the fact that I haven’t worked with oil pastels for a very long time. I thought it would be fun to reacquaint myself with them again. In the event I’m just blundering about.
I will sleep on it overnight, and take a fresh look over tomorrow. Tuesday is my regular climbing day, so I will not be able to fiddle with it. There will be an opportunity, however, to stand back and take a careful look at the situation. At the moment I have to confess that I’m feeling pretty deflated.
