I’m a Dylan Thomas man myself.

Not that I’m Welsh, of course …. although I can sing the Welsh national anthem in Welsh. The closest I can get is that my maternal great uncle retired to Llanishen when one of his daughters married a man from Cardiff. But I digress!

No: what I have in mind is that Dylan Thomas’ great poem about death has always resonated very strongly with me.

“Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”

Thomas is adamant that as one ages one should not resign oneself to death, but fight against it with all one’s emotional and physical strength.

A good deal of my work recently has (on reflection) been about age and the approach of death. I’m not sure that at any point I rise to “rage” …. at least, not yet. Surely, however, I do not expect to “go gentle”.
